Special Political and Decolonization Committee
Topic 1: South Sudan; Topic 2: Israel Palestine
The Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly is The
Special Political and Decolonization Committee. This committee deals with
issues related to refugees, peacekeeping, decolonization, outer space, public information, and maintaining human rights. Since its founding, SPECPOL has helped to resolve issues related to conflict around the world. One such project was the creation of UNRWA to provide relief to Palestinian Refugees. However, SPECPOL has received criticism over the years from organization such as the UN Watch for its impartiality.
In this committee delegates will explore two topics: the South Sudan Civil
War and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. In South Sudan, government and
opposition forces have been at war since 2013, resulting in the displacement of nearly two million people. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict dates back to Israel’s founding in 1948 and remains prominent today with issues such as Palestinian terror attacks and Israeli settlements in the West Bank. At OMUN delegates must debate and negotiate in order to determine the role that SPECPOL can play in the hopes of bringing peace to both of these conflicts.
